‘Your vacation starts where civilisation ends,’ promises theatre group Dood Paard (‘Dead Horse’) in the new play ‘Freetown’.
Three women escape to Venus Beach, a seaside get -away filled with sun, sand, affordable luxury and – crucially – enticingly exotic men. While these men bring the women’s romantic and sexual fantasies to life in the evenings, the women spend their days on the sand dissecting their lives and the world around them through poetically sharp dialogue. In so doing, they become unintentional commentators on love, poverty and the changing world at large.
The stage is set with a row of white beach chairs amidst a sea of empty aluminum cans, their clanking providing a soundtrack of sorts as Ellen Goemans, Lies Pauwels and Manja Topper bring the story of this vacation to life… in an array of animal print beachwear, of course.
